Main concepts for Chemistry test

CHEMISTRY UNIT MAIN CONCEPTS

Atomic theory

*Describe the progression of atomic theory from Democritus to the modern theory

*Be able to compare each atomic theory

Atoms

*What is the location and charge of each structure in an atom?

*Know how to correctly draw a simple atom with the correct number of structures, and energy levels

*Isotopes

*Formation of positive and negative ions

Periodic table

*How is the periodic table arranged?

*Match element symbols/ element names; Identify the atomic number and mass number; # of protons/electrons/neutrons

*Know properties of the Alkali metals, Alkaline Earth metals, Halogens, and Noble gases

Chemical bonds

*Difference between ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds

*Properties of compounds that form from ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds

*Lewis structures for individual atoms and molecules

*Know how to read and write chemical formulas- Understand how to translate the chemical formula in words (example: Carbon tetrafluoride) into a chemical formula (CCl4)

Chemical reactions

*How to balance chemical equations

*Law of Conservation of Mass

*Identify different types of reactions

*Factors that can change the rate of reaction

*Activation energy

  1. Emily says:

Wait Tiff when you say match element symbols with names does that mean we have to memorize the elements and their symbols? Aren’t we going to have a periodic table?

    • tifftai says:

yes, you’ll have a periodic table so you don’t need to memorize it! i just mean that you should be able to find that “C” is for carbon, not chlorine, and gold is not “Go”

  2. Emily says:

Oh okay good! Mental break down avoided 🙂
